Coming Attractions

Today is Saturday, 1 July 2006.

On this date in 1858, Charles Darwin publicly presented for the first time his views on natural selection and evolution, at the Linnean Society in London.

On this date in 1916, the British Army began the Battle of the Somme in France, an attempt to break the German trench lines; the battle would last five months and result in negligible gains. Some 20,000 British troops died the first day, the highest single-day casualty toll in the history of the British army. In all, over 300,000 British and German soldiers would die.

On this date in 1925, the revered French composer and pianist Erik Satie died; born 17 May 1866.

On 1 July 1,000,002,006 A.D./C.E., your Museum of the Bourgeois executive director will post a special report: Human Evolution -- The Last Billion Years. It will explore which of the above roads humanity chose to take: Somme or Satie.
