A Modest Proposal

Today is Monday, 24 November 2008.

From Wikipedia’s article on Neville Chamberlain, he of Munich ’38 fame, and Prime Minister of the UK at the outbreak of war in ’39.

“Following the debacle of the British expedition to Norway, Chamberlain found himself under siege in the House of Commons. During the Norway Debate of 7 May, Leo Amery – who had been one of Chamberlain's personal friends – delivered a devastating indictment of Chamberlain's conduct of the war. In concluding his speech, he quoted the words of Oliver Cromwell to the Long Parliament: “You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go.”

It’s very simple.

Having, at long last, a shred of decency remaining and emerging, W and Cheney immediately resign.

The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, becomes President.

President Pelosi nominates Barack Obama as Vice President. The House and Senate confirm Obama, and he is sworn in.

President Pelosi resigns, and Barack Obama is sworn in as 45th President.

It could happen in one day.

Were, and the Mournful Subjunctive is hereby very deliberately invoked, W and Cheney to have left a shred of decency remaining and emerging.

“In the name of God, go”.

I'm afraid that, instead of doing such a decent thing, they're going to do all the damage they possibly can in their remaining weeks/days/hours...

Hey La Libertine -

Some are of the opinion that ANYTHING Mr. Bush or Mr. Cheney do is "damage." Sit back and relax. January 20th is less than two months away. Yes, that length of time seems like an eternity considering the war, the economy, etc. etc. But get real - they won't resign. In your view, their resignations would be viewed as doing something decent. This infers that everything they have done is indecent. No one can make that arguement stick.

We all know that HH will have several choice words regarding whomever Mr. Bush chooses to bestow a pardon upon in his last couple of days in office. In fact, we know that HH will have a field day with that. Besides, if Mr. Bush and Mr. Chaney were to resign, they would not have the opportunity to make those pardons, thus depriving HH of a plethera of subject matter for comment.

Hey Chill

Let's explore the scenario a little further. A meaningful act of contrition within the Judeo-Christian ritual of forgiveness and healing. An act that would humanize an administration for which an objective observer would be able to provide a mountain of incidents that minimally imply institutional inhumanity that compare unfavorably with such low lights in U.S. history as the removal of the indigenous people of the SE U.S. during the Jackson administration, the gratuitous punishment of the Navajo meted out by Kit Carson, etc. all rolled into one presidential administration.

A theme of cavalier indifference and/or disregard of the rights of the middle income citizens and economically disadvantaged citizens that would confer Franciscan piety on the mythical 'Let them eat cake,' sentiments of the court of Louis the XVth by comparison.

Contrition. A human emotion seeking forgiveness. That would be a comfort to those of us whose expectations are that the U.S. should be 200+ years better than the vision that our founders charted for us.

...still waiting to exhale.
