Conservative Slanders the Troops

Today is Sunday, 4 June 2006.

On the 31 May 2006 broadcast of his filthfest, The O’Reilly Factor, conservative idol Bill O’Reilly said:

O'REILLY : In Malmédy, as you know, U.S. forces captured SS forces who had their hands in the air and they were unarmed, and they shot them down. You know that. That's on the record. Been documented. (Italics added)*

O’Reilly was addressing Wesley Clark, General, US Army (Ret.); O’Reilly was attempting to excuse the Haditha massacre by invoking the US Army murders of unarmed Waffen SS soldiers at Malmedy in France.

Problem: On 17 December 1944, some 84 surrendered and unarmed US soldiers of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Batallion were massacred by Kampfgruppe Peiper of the 1st SS Panzer Division, Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler.

O’Reilly spoke the same lie on 5 October 2005, also during an interchange with Clark, when O’Reilly was attempting to excuse the torture and murders at Abu Ghraib prison.

Anyone who has ever read a history of the 1939-45 War in Europe will have encountered the SS atrocity at Malmedy. Anyone who has read a history of war atrocities, ditto. Anyone who has read a history of the Battle of the Bulge, ditto. Anyone who has seen the major motion picture, The Battle of the Bulge (1965), ditto.

Is O’Reilly so thoroughly historically ignorant that he should required to re-take K-12 before broadcasting again? Is his memory so impaired that he should be institutionalized for the public good? Is he actually a Nazi sympathizer trying to cover-up for the SS?

Or is Bill O’Heilly simply a money- and power-grubbing neo-fascist propagandroid pandering hate entertainment in the guise of journalism?

And where are the faux-patriotic legions of the Right? Why are they not demanding the head of their boy Bill O’Reilly, for desecrating the honour of American fighting men, by equating them with the Nazi SS?

I report, you decide.

Throughout the Cold War, American propaganda promised full support for rebellions against “Commie” regimes. When Hungarians revolted in 1956, Eisenhower revealed the hypocrisy of this policy by turning his back. Likewise, when the Tian'anmen Square Massacre occurred on this date in 1989, G.H.W. Bush confined himself to running his mouth.

Definitely the latter.

One place they are not is the Army/Navy/Air Force/Marines. An incredibly low percentage of these characters have served or have any intention to serve. That's why they have been dubbed the "101st Fighting Keyboardists."
