"For the Union Dead" 2
Today remains Saturday, 23 September 2006.
Refer to earlier column today, as this is an add-on.
In World War Two, 23% of American military combat deaths were of males from the upper 25%, earned income-wise. (Iraq, down to 17%.)
Well, ain’t that special of them?
Seems to me, the more your net worth, the more you owe in service to your country, if, you claim to believe in patriotism and such.

I hold that those more fortunate (in income and otherwise) have a responsibility to those less so. I too have railed against the inequities in the military and those who are losing their lives in combat, particularly the ill-considered and reprehensible war we began in Iraq.
But I do not think believing in "patriotism and such" precludes one from being a pacifist. Until we reach the world that John Lennon imagined (or you and Mrs. HH overthrow the government), I will still be a loyal citizen of the USA.
I will, however, defend your right to burn the flag and marry your gay minister. (My apologies to Mrs. HH--just an illustration.)
