Today is Saturday, 5 June 2010.
OMG: WTF did one think would happen?
Begin with a nation teeming with energy-wasting gluttons like maggots on yesterday’s corpse, that derives 30% of its petroleum production from off-shore wells, stir in the Republicrap lie that corporate persons are inherently good (none of that Original Sin nastiness to which human persons are heir, thanks to that bitch Eve) and can be trusted to regulate themselves, and the question regarding a catastrophic oil spill is not “IF”, but “WHEN”.
The Great Repugnican Oil Spill demonstrates that deep-drilling technology is insufficiently developed for actual use, particularly when Repugnican deregulate-and-the-public-be-damned! philosophy dictates that corporate malefactors may, with impunity, choose greed over the public good.
Legislation should be immediately passed and signed imposing a minimum ten-year ban on new drilling, requiring all companies operating off-shore drilling to place all pertinent assets into subsidiaries, and placing all such subsidiaries into temporary receivership under strict government control, until such time as the parent companies demonstrate that they are able to pump without hazard. The parent companies should also be made liable for any and all damages resulting from spills, and be required to carry liability insurance for same, in amounts derived from the current experience.
BP itself should be immediately put into temporary receivership for the duration.

B-b-but didn't you see Tony Hayward's BP apology commercial? BP takes full responsibility! And gosh, all the beaches, water, and fowl pictured really do look pretty clean already! (sarcasm off)

I have been ranting and raving for about how this is the legacy of de-regulation that began in the Reagan era. (see my comment on Ms. Bessie's Facebook page) Glad to see someone else gets it.
But surely you include yourself as part of the "nation teeming with energy-wasting gluttons like maggots on yesterday's corpse.." How not to part of it is the real issue here, isn't it?
Certainly I'm part of the "nation teeming..." One can only mount a struggle against the beast from the heart of the beast. (And it's long past the moment when one could go anywhere on the planet and not be part of it.) The sad thing is that our ravenous global capitalist system may last long enough to do such fundamental, systemic damage to all the ecologies of the planet that, by the time people realize the damage being done, it will be too late.
