Happy Watergate Break-In Day!

(Bears repeating!)

Yes, once again, it's the anniversary of that lovely day in 1972 when Richard Nixon finally overreached himself, and his creatures, for the second time, burglarized the Democratic National Committee, and were apprehended.

Why, when all the opinion polling and other signs and portents pointed to a November victory that would be, at the least, quite solid? No good evidence has ever emerged, but I believe that this is one instance in which the psychological must come to the fore: Nixon was ever paranoid, vindictive, and tremendously insecure, and couldn't help but frequently attempt to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Lucky us (as in, "humanity").

Nixon was, among other things, a quick, easy, and vicious drunk, who once, while drinking with his best friend (the incomparably-named Bebe Rebozo), and in a fit of mad pique, ordered the Sixth (Mediterranean) Fleet into position for a nuclear strike against Syria.

Thank you, Republican Party!
